Introducing…. Peter Wright

Peter is Business Development Manager for Site Accommodation at Portakabin Scotland. It’s a role he has undertaken for almost two years, following eight years’ experience in business development for a major aluminium products manufacturer serving the construction industry.

We spoke to him about his role and plans for growth as Portakabin looks to serve the flourishing city centre regeneration and housing markets in Scotland.

New challenge

It was a great opportunity and challenge to join Portakabin and learn about new products from the industry leader. My job is to make sure I have a thorough understanding of client requirements and see how we can match our products and services to meet those requirements and exceed their expectations.

Growing team

We have an exceptional team here in the Glasgow depot and the wider team across the country, who we’re in regular contact with and get to bounce ideas off. The team in our yards do an amazing job, responding to client needs and deadlines – they make it happen when we need it most. This year we’re planning to grow our team and move to a new depot with much more capacity, to meet a strong pipeline of contracts.

Modular solutions

We’ve just completed an office and welfare installation for a five-year construction project, where the customer wanted an open plan aspect to allow easier collaboration between their teams. Our design team came up with a modular solution to meet that demand, which also happens to be the most energy efficient in the market place. Modular creates a completely different working environment – you actually feel like you’re in a head office in a city centre.

Customer feedback

We get excellent feedback from new customers when they start to use our site offices, many telling us that it makes a major difference to their day to day working life. A happy workforce is a more productive workforce, so they value the high-quality offices, canteens and toilet facilities and those extra touches such as a water bowser or boot-washer. Our clients can pretty much design the layout to their own specification.

Market trends

We’re seeing a marked increase in longer-term projects, ranging from two to up to seven years, as major housing estates are developed and major cities around the country plan regeneration projects. Sustainable solutions are also in demand with customers asking us how energy efficient our buildings are and specifying double-glazed windows and motion-sensitive lighting, for example. Everyone is much more conscious about how we impact the world.

And finally…

Spare time – what’s that? When my wife and I have finished sharing out the duties of getting our seven-year-old daughter to all her various clubs, it’s just nice to enjoy a good meal and watch a boxset on the couch – and going to the gym, of course, to offset that.
